NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV — A 15-year-old defendant made his initial appearance in North Las Vegas Justice Court on Tuesday, facing open murder and attempted murder charges in connection with a deadly retaliatory ambush that erupted after a brawl between high school students.
The defendant, identified in court documents as Dezmond Teate-Edwards, appeared before a North Las Vegas Justice of the Peace during a brief arraignment proceeding.
He was remanded into secure custody without bail, with the court setting his next formal preliminary hearing for November 17, 2026.
According to arrest declarations and investigative filings compiled by the North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD), the deadly encounter stemmed from an escalating physical fight involving students from Legacy High School.
Detectives allege that following the initial brawl, Teate-Edwards coordinated with older associates to orchestrate a retaliatory confrontation.
The group allegedly tracked down the rival teenagers’ vehicle in a BMW, pulling alongside before occupants unleashed a coordinated 21-round barrage of gunfire into the target car.
The high-volume spray struck multiple passengers, fatally wounding one teenager and critically injuring another.

High School Brawl Escalates to Vehicular Tracking and Ambush
Arrest affidavits detail how an after-school physical altercation quickly metastasized into lethal gun violence.
Witness statements and surveillance footage gathered across the neighborhood revealed that following the fight, the victims entered their vehicle to leave the area.
Detectives determined that Teate-Edwards reached out to adult acquaintances to mount an armed pursuit.
The pursuing BMW cornered and paralleled the victims’ vehicle along a residential street.
Gunmen inside the BMW discharged at least 21 rounds through the windows, piercing the vehicle cabin and sending the car careening off the road.
Arriving patrol officers and emergency responders found the victims suffering from extensive trauma.
One teenager was pronounced dead at University Medical Center (UMC) Trauma, while surviving occupants were treated for severe gunshot wounds.
Detectives linked the BMW and the retaliatory plot to Teate-Edwards through cell phone telemetry, surveillance cameras, and witness identifications, leading to his arrest by North Las Vegas tactical units.
Adult Certification and Prosecutorial Jurisdiction
Because Teate-Edwards is 15 years old, the case carries significant legal questions regarding juvenile transfer statutes.

Under Nevada law, juvenile defendants charged with category A felonies involving deadly weapons can be certified as adults following a formal discretionary evaluation by the Clark County District Attorney’s Office.
If certified, Teate-Edwards would be tried directly in the Eighth Judicial District Court, exposing him to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole upon conviction.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office and NLVPD continue to withhold certain identifying records of minor victims as detectives pursue outstanding warrants for the other occupants of the BMW involved in the ambush.
