City Officials Greenlight Boring Company’s Transit Plan
By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, January 29, 2026 10:31 am
Las Vegas city officials have issued the first permit allowing The Boring Company to begin expanding its underground Vegas Loop transit system into the downtown area. The permit, approved this week, marks a milestone for the project and opens the door for further infrastructure development in the city.
According to the permit details, two underground connector tunnels will link the Las Vegas Convention Center with The Strat Hotel, Casino & Tower. City leaders say the expansion aims to provide an alternative transit option that could help ease congestion and encourage visitors to explore more destinations in the downtown area.
Mayor Shelley Berkley said the project offers a new way for tourists and residents to travel between key points in the city. Officials and supporters also believe the Loop’s expansion could generate increased foot traffic for businesses in areas such as the 18B Las Vegas Arts District.
While this permit represents an early phase of the larger network expansion envisioned by The Boring Company, it reflects ongoing efforts to modernize transportation options in Las Vegas. Additional phases of the project are expected to extend the network to other parts of the city over time.
