Federal Incident Management Team 1 Assumes Command of Davis Fire as Crews Battle to Hold Mount Rose Corridor

WASHOE VALLEY, NV — Federal firefighting resources expanded significantly across Northern Nevada as Southwest Area Incident Management Team 1, a specialized Complex Incident Management Team (CIMT), officially assumed operational command of the Davis Fire.

The multi-agency deployment integrates heavy aerial assets and ground crews into a unified command structure alongside the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) and the U.S. Forest Service – Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Firefighters are focused on fortifying fire lines along the heavily populated Mount Rose Highway (State Route 431) corridor.

Holding the Line at Mount Rose Highway

The fire ignited in the day-use area of Davis Creek Regional Park before erratic wind gusts pushed the flaming front north and west into dense timber, heavy brush, and residential subdivisions.

With the arrival of Incident Management Team 1, commanders established a centralized base at Galena High School to orchestrate more than 600 wildland personnel.

The primary tactical objective remains keeping the fire south and east of State Route 431 to prevent embers from launching into untreated timber stands on the slopes of Mount Rose.

On the northern perimeter, strike teams deployed bulldozers and hand crews cutting direct fire lines, reinforced by CL-415 amphibious “Super Scooper” aircraft dipping out of nearby water bodies to drop continuous water walls ahead of the advancing flames.

Evacuations and Power Grid Safety

Mandatory evacuation orders enforced by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office remain active across several communities, including ArrowCreek, Montreux, St. James Village, Galena Terrace, Sky Tavern, and the Mount Rose Ski Tahoe resort.

An evacuation center has been established at the Reno Senior Center on East 9th Street, with large animal staging facilitated at the UNR Equestrian Center and Fuji Park in Carson City.

Fire behavior analysts warn that forecast afternoon wind gusts and low relative humidity levels present challenging red-flag conditions along the Sierra front. Structure protection groups remain staged with defensive engine strike teams in neighborhoods along the highway corridor to protect residential subdivisions.

“Our highest priority is protecting life, property, and critical utility corridors while keeping this fire from hooking across the highway,” incident commanders stated during morning operational briefings. “Having a federal complex incident management team on the ground provides the administrative and logistical muscle needed to sustain this firefight.”

The cause of the fire remains under formal joint investigation by Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District investigators and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
