CARSON CITY, NV — With multi-agency firefighting crews expanding containment on the Hawk Fire to 95%, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo formally petitioned President Biden and the White House on Friday, August 28, 2026, for a Presidential Emergency Declaration to unlock federal recovery funds for Washoe County.

The request comes as comprehensive damage assessment strike teams confirmed that the human-caused fire destroyed 47 single-family homes and one commercial structure, while inflicting severe structural damage on eight additional buildings across northwest Reno foothills.

Pushing for Full Containment Ahead of Weekend Storms

Approximately 550 personnel, supported by 38 engines and four helicopters, remain assigned to Great Basin Team 6 to eliminate interior hotspots and build sediment erosion barriers.

On the western perimeter, hand crews focused on clearing unburned timber pockets in steeper ravines, while eastern crews worked to repair dozer containment lines.

Meteorologists forecast a 50% to 70% chance of weekend showers across the Truckee River basin. While higher humidity and precipitation will assist with remaining smoldering fuels, emergency managers cautioned that stripped vegetation on Peavine Mountain poses flash flood and debris flow risks for foothill neighborhoods.

Unlocking Federal Relief for Washoe County

A presidential declaration would direct FEMA to mobilize heavy equipment, provide emergency grants for municipal infrastructure restoration, and fund public safety protective measures at federal discretion.

“The actions from our first responders, state agencies and local and federal partners have been nothing short of heroic while battling the Hawk Fire,” Governor Joe Lombardo said in a statement. “Now, as we begin the road to recovery, Nevada is requesting the full support of our federal partners to protect our communities, restore critical infrastructure, and help those impacted by this devastating fire recover and rebuild.”

To support immediate recovery, the NV Energy Foundation committed a $100,000 relief grant divided among the American Red Cross Northern Nevada Chapter, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, and the Salvation Army.

While evacuation orders have been lifted, public lands and recreation trails within the burn scar remain closed under federal orders, with trespassers subject to misdemeanor fines.
