Hold Onto Your Hats: 60 MPH Gusts Trigger Wind and Dust Alerts Across Las Vegas
By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, March 31, 2026 9:15 am
Las Vegas residents are waking up to “gloomy and overcast” conditions as a powerful spring storm system sweeps through Southern Nevada. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Wind Advisory effective through 11:00 p.m. Wednesday, warning of a sustained southwest wind between 25 and 35 mph. However, it is the localized gusts—expected to hit a staggering 50 to 60 mph—that have officials on high alert.
The turbulent air has triggered a secondary Dust Advisory from Clark County’s Division of Air Quality. High-profile vehicles and daily commuters alike are facing significantly reduced visibility as the winds kick up loose desert soil and construction debris across the valley’s major thoroughfares.
Health officials are advising residents, particularly those with pre-existing respiratory issues, children, and the elderly, to stay indoors today. As the Air Quality Index (AQI) fluctuates due to high levels of blowing particulates, the risk of aggravated asthma and other breathing complications increases. Outdoor workers are encouraged to wear protective face coverings and secure any loose equipment at job sites to prevent flying debris.
