LAS VEGAS, NV — Traffic investigators with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Fatal Detail have arrested an elderly driver following a violent head-on collision that claimed the life of a passenger late Tuesday night.
The multi-vehicle incident marks the valley’s 53rd traffic-related fatality of the 2026 calendar year, highlighting a dangerous week on Southern Nevada roadways.
The Crossover Collision Footprint
The initial emergency sequence unfolded on West Warm Springs Road, just west of the intersection at Montessouri Street and South Rainbow Boulevard. According to preliminary physical evidence evaluated at the scene, a 2020 Toyota Sienna, driven by 73-year-old Calvin Hayashi, was traveling eastbound when it suddenly crossed over the median into oncoming westbound travel lanes.
The driver of an oncoming 2021 Tesla Model Y attempted an emergency evasive maneuver, but both vehicles collided heavily before coming to a rest in the middle of the travel lanes. Emergency medical teams rushed a 33-year-old female rear passenger from the Toyota to University Medical Center’s (UMC) Trauma Center. While initially listed in serious condition, her health deteriorated rapidly, and she succumbed to severe internal trauma.
DUI Charges Logged at CCDC
Both drivers survived the impact with minor injuries. Traffic officers evaluating Hayashi at the scene determined him to be criminally under the influence. Following medical clearance, Hayashi was formally booked into the Clark County Detention Center (CCDC) on felony counts of driving under the influence (DUI) resulting in death.
The driver of the Tesla was evaluated and found to be completely sober. The identity of the deceased passenger remains withheld pending formal notification protocols handled by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
