Las Vegas Faces Tourism Decline Amid Stricter U.S. Policies

Las Vegas, the crown jewel of American tourism, is facing a downturn as international visitors opt for destinations perceived as more welcoming. Recent data reveals a 7.8% decline in visitor numbers in March 2025 compared to the previous year, with gaming revenues on the Strip dropping by 4.8% . This trend is attributed to stringent immigration policies and heightened border enforcement, which have led to travel advisories from countries like the UK, Finland, and Germany .
The World Travel & Tourism Council projects a $12.5 billion loss in international visitor spending for the U.S. in 2025, signaling a broader national issue . In Las Vegas, hotel occupancy rates have fallen to 82.9%, down from 85.3% the previous year, and room nights booked have decreased by 6.1% . Despite a 10% increase in convention attendance, this hasn’t offset the decline in leisure travel.
The city’s tourism-dependent economy is feeling the strain, with businesses from casinos to local eateries experiencing reduced patronage. As international travelers face increased scrutiny and potential detentions, many are choosing alternative destinations, impacting not only Las Vegas but the broader U.S. tourism industry.
To reverse this trend, policymakers and industry leaders must address the factors deterring international visitors. Ensuring a balance between national security and a welcoming environment is crucial for the revival of Las Vegas’s tourism sector.
