Las Vegas Neighbors Push for NDOT Action on Highway Homeless Camps

Las Vegas, NV – Frustrated residents in a Las Vegas neighborhood are demanding action from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to clear homeless encampments along a stretch of U.S. 95 near Rosewood Drive.
A petition circulated by residents urges NDOT to address the growing issue. The area behind the freeway fence, state property under NDOT’s responsibility, has become a hotspot for homeless encampments. Tents, debris, and shopping carts litter the roadside, with some camps venturing into nearby neighborhoods.
“They set up camp and leave trash everywhere,” said June Maes, a longtime resident concerned about the situation. “It’s becoming a safety hazard, and we feel helpless.”
NDOT acknowledges the growing problem and the strain it places on their resources. The agency spent $6.6 million on cleanups in the past year alone, collecting an average of 2,981 yards of trash monthly.
NDOT spokesperson explained that emergency roadwork takes priority, and tackling encampments may be delayed. Additionally, coordinating with social service agencies and Metro Police to ensure safe cleanups further impacts the timeline.
Despite recent cleanups on August 28th, residents like Maes say the problem persists. They observed improvements near Sahara Avenue and U.S. 95, but numerous tents and debris remained.
In a statement, NDOT outlined their efforts on Rosewood Drive:
- Conducted an extensive cleanup, offering shelter and medical support.
- Identified fence-cutting by homeless individuals and are implementing security solutions.
- Highlighted the impact of encampment cleanups on other critical maintenance tasks.
- Reiterated their commitment to collaborate with local authorities for a clean and safe right-of-way.
Clark County Chairman Tick Segerblom recently announced increased county resources to assist in clearing encampments across East Las Vegas neighborhoods.
