Man Armed with Rifle Dies in Custody Following Neighborhood Shooting Incident in North Las Vegas

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV — An active shooter response in a North Las Vegas neighborhood ended tragically on Sunday after an armed suspect opened fire with a rifle and subsequently died during a physical altercation with responding officers.
The incident has triggered an independent regional investigation into the use of physical force.
Rifle Fire on Yellowhammer Place
According to preliminary field reports unsealed by the North Las Vegas Police Department, emergency dispatchers received multiple frantic 911 calls around 12:00 PM regarding a man actively discharging a firearm out in the open.
Callers reported that the individual was moving through the 6000 block of Yellowhammer Place, near Decatur Boulevard and Deer Springs Way, randomly firing an AR-15 style rifle into the surrounding neighborhood.
Tactical units flooded the area, immediately establishing a perimeter to contain the threat. Officers confronted the armed man and attempted to disarm him, leading to an intense, close-quarters physical struggle as the suspect violently resisted being taken into custody.

In-Custody Death Investigation
While officers successfully managed to wrestle the rifle away and secure the suspect in handcuffs, the man became unresponsive shortly after being physically subdued. Medical personnel staged nearby rushed onto the scene to administer emergency life-saving measures, but the suspect was pronounced dead. No officers or neighborhood residents were wounded by the suspect’s gunfire.
The identity of the deceased shooter is being withheld pending formal confirmation and family notifications by the Clark County Coroner’s Office, which will also conduct an autopsy to determine the definitive cause of death. As per standard procedure for in-custody fatalities, an extensive investigation is underway to review the tactics used during the apprehension.
