LAS VEGAS, NV — It was an incredibly heavy holiday weekend for regional first responders as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s (LVMPD) Collision Investigation Section processed multiple high-impact wreckage scenes that ultimately marked the valley’s 47th and 48th traffic fatalities of the year.
Friday: Fatal Broadside Collision on Boulder Highway
The first incident occurred on the morning of Friday, May 22, 2026, at 11:33 AM at the intersection of Boulder Highway and Desert Horizons Drive in the southeast valley floor.
According to fatal detail investigators, a 2025 Hyundai Elantra was traveling northbound on Boulder Highway at an excessive rate of speed. Concurrently, a 2024 Chrysler Pacifica, driven by a 55-year-old Las Vegas resident, attempted to execute a left-hand turn from westbound Desert Horizons Drive onto southbound Boulder Highway.
The speeding Hyundai broadsided the driver’s side of the Chrysler Pacifica, redirecting both vehicles into the northwest corner of the intersection. The 55-year-old driver of the Pacifica was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, marking Metro’s 47th traffic-related fatality of 2026. His 43-year-old female passenger and the 28-year-old male driver of the Hyundai were rushed to Sunrise Hospital with severe injuries. The driver of the Hyundai was booked in absentia for reckless driving-related charges.
Saturday: Suspected DUI Red-Light Wreck on Washington Avenue
Less than 24 hours later, on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at approximately 5:30 AM, emergency crews swarmed a secondary, unrelated fatal collision at the intersection of East Washington Avenue and North Bruce Street.
Traffic investigators determined that a 21-year-old Las Vegas woman driving a 2015 Ford Mustang convertible was traveling at an excessive speed when she failed to slow down for a yellow light. The Mustang entered the intersection just as the signal turned red, violently slamming into the right side of a 1993 Nissan pickup truck that was executing a legal left turn.
The driver of the Nissan, a 49-year-old Las Vegas man, succumbed to severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, logging the valley’s 48th traffic fatality of the year. The driver of the Mustang was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and subsequently arrested in absentia on charges related to driving under the influence (DUI) and felony reckless driving.
