Nearly Three Dozen Dogs Removed From Las Vegas Home in Extreme Neglect Case

Las Vegas, NV — Animal control officers removed 35 dogs from a home on Caviar Drive after city officials found the residence in poor condition, with extensive feces and urine buildup, according to a news release from the City of Las Vegas.
The situation came to light Tuesday when neighbors discovered the front door of the home open and saw about 20 dogs running loose in the neighborhood near Lake Mead and Rainbow Boulevards.
Owner’s Explanation
The homeowner, who had not been living in the house for two weeks due to ongoing repairs, told authorities she stopped by daily to feed and provide water for the dogs. She agreed to surrender all 35 animals, which included 32 terrier/terrier dachshund mixes, one miniature poodle, and two dachshunds.
Animal control officers, with the help of neighbors, captured 19 dogs outside the home and 14 inside. Two additional dogs were found wandering nearby.
Overcrowded Shelter
The dogs were transported to the Animal Foundation, which is already grappling with severe overcrowding. The shelter took in 236 animals last weekend alone, bringing their population to over 600 even before the new arrivals.
In a social media post, the shelter urged community members to consider adopting or fostering animals to alleviate the strain.
Prior Warnings
City officials revealed that this was not the first time the property had been flagged. In March 2024, a welfare check at the home found eight dogs. During a follow-up visit in April, officials reported the home was clean and only three dogs remained.
Legal Action
The homeowner was cited for two misdemeanor violations: exceeding the allowed number of pets and unsanitary living conditions.
Authorities remind residents to report suspected animal neglect and encourage responsible pet ownership. The Animal Foundation continues to work tirelessly to find homes for animals in need.
