Nevada Governor Pushes $200M Affordable Housing Plan Without Union Red Tape

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo is stepping up where bloated bureaucracy has long failed — taking action to make housing affordable by prioritizing efficiency and taxpayer value. His newly introduced Assembly Bill 540 aims to inject $200 million into acquiring and expanding attainable housing across Nevada. Instead of funneling money into endless red tape, this proposal challenges the status quo by cutting costs where it matters: inflated labor mandates that often balloon project prices without improving results.

Under this bill, housing projects receiving funding would not be classified as “public works,” meaning developers wouldn’t be forced to meet prevailing wage requirements — a move that promises quicker, more affordable housing without government interference choking progress. It’s a direct challenge to union-driven regulations that often stall development and drive up taxpayer costs.

Governor Lombardo’s move puts Nevadans first — empowering the private sector, stretching state dollars further, and bringing real solutions to families being priced out of the housing market. Instead of just throwing more taxpayer money at the problem, Lombardo is demanding smarter investments with less government waste.

Meanwhile, over in D.C., Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is offering the usual federal band-aid: more bills, more programs, and more government spending. While her PRICE Act and housing grant proposals sound noble, history reminds us that throwing money at a problem doesn’t fix it — especially when that money comes with strings, delays, and inefficiencies.

As inflation chips away at working families’ purchasing power and home prices soar, the real question is: do we want more Washington-style “solutions,” or bold, state-driven leadership that delivers results?

Governor Lombardo is betting on the latter — and taxpayers should, too.
