Nevada Minimum Wage to Hit $12 Per Hour on July 1st

Las Vegas, NV – Nevada workers will see a bump in their paychecks come July 1st, 2024, as the state’s minimum wage increases to $12 per hour.

Phased Increase Culminates in July

This change marks the culmination of Assembly Bill 456, passed in 2019. The bill mandated a gradual increase in the minimum wage by 75 cents annually over a five-year period.

Goodbye Two-Tier System

Voters in Nevada also played a role in shaping the state’s minimum wage landscape. In November 2022, Nevada Ballot Question 2 successfully eliminated the two-tier minimum wage system. Previously, employers offering qualified health benefits could pay a slightly lower minimum wage. With the passing of Ballot Question 2, a single, standardized minimum wage of $12 per hour now applies to all covered Nevada employees.

Overtime Implications

The minimum wage hike also impacts overtime pay calculations. Nevada Revised Statute 608.018 outlines specific exemptions to overtime requirements. However, for all other covered employees, the increase in minimum wage translates to a corresponding rise in daily overtime rates.

Here’s a breakdown of overtime eligibility in Nevada:

  • Employees earning $18 per hour (or 1.5 times the minimum wage) or more: Qualify for overtime pay at one and one-half times their regular rate of pay for exceeding 40 hours worked in a week.
  • Employees earning less than $18 per hour: Qualify for overtime pay at one and one-half times their regular rate of pay for exceeding either 8 hours worked in a 24-hour period or 40 hours worked in a workweek.
