New Year Brings Tougher DUI Sentences and Expanded Safety Regulations in Nevada

Stricter penalties for impaired driving are now in effect across Nevada following the implementation of Governor Joe Lombardo’s crime bill and dozens of additional state laws that took effect at the start of the new year.
Under the updated statute, drivers convicted of DUI resulting in death may now face sentences of up to 25 years in prison, depending on prior offenses. Previously, the penalty range for such cases was two to twenty years.
The DUI changes are part of a broader legislative package that took effect at midnight on January 1, alongside 55 Senate and Assembly bills approved during the last legislative session. Many of the new laws address healthcare and insurance matters, including expanded medical service options and revised regulatory protections.
Among the public safety measures enacted is Assembly Bill 198, known as “Lizzy’s Law,” which establishes new statewide safety standards for inflatable amusement structures such as bounce houses. The legislation was introduced following the 2019 death of Lizzy Hammond, who was killed when a bounce house became airborne during a wind event and struck nearby power lines.
Under the new requirements, businesses that rent inflatable structures must regularly document safety inspections, ensure the equipment is properly anchored, and carry at least $1 million in liability insurance.
Another law taking effect, Assembly Bill 116, introduces regulations for ghost kitchens. The measure allows for fines of up to $100 per order for restaurants found to be operating under alternate business names through third-party delivery platforms without proper disclosure.
State officials say the changes are intended to strengthen public safety, improve transparency, and modernize Nevada’s regulatory framework as the new year begins.
