In a dramatic turn of events in Boulder City, an off-duty Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officer and his wife were forced to take decisive action, shooting and killing a man who was allegedly assaulting and strangling a woman in their neighbor’s backyard.
According to LVMPD Captain Kurt McKenzie, the incident unfolded Friday evening in the 700 block of 6th Street when the officer and his wife heard a commotion nearby. Upon investigating, the off-duty officer witnessed a man mounted on top of a woman, punching and strangling her. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the officer instructed his wife to call 911 and intervened to separate the attacker from the woman.
After escorting the victim to safety in his front yard, the officer handed her over to his wife for protection. However, the male assailant followed them into the yard. Ignoring repeated warnings to stop advancing, the suspect continued toward the officer and his wife. Both opened fire, fatally striking the man.
Medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene, and authorities are now investigating the incident. According to McKenzie, the case is being treated as an officer-involved shooting given the officer’s employment with LVMPD. This marks the department’s first officer-involved shooting in 2025.
Local residents expressed concern about the incident, noting its proximity to homes and schools. “It’s honestly nerve-wracking just because it’s so close to where a lot of people live,” said Colin Weyrauch, a Boulder City High School student who heard the commotion.
The female victim has not been publicly identified, and investigators are determining whether the initial attack stemmed from a domestic violence dispute. Authorities confirmed that no officers were injured in the incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The courageous actions of this off-duty officer and his wife bring the topic of self-defense and the protection of others into sharp focus. At a time when violent acts seem to occur too close to home, this incident reminds us of the importance of vigilance and swift action to ensure the safety of those in need.
