Seven Years Later, Las Vegas Remembers 1 October

Las Vegas, NV – Seven years after the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history, Clark County gathered to remember the 58 lives lost on 1 October 2017. The Sunrise Remembrance Ceremony, held at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater, offered a space for healing and reflection for survivors, families of victims, and first responders.

The ceremony featured poignant speeches from those deeply impacted by the tragedy. Michael Duarte, who lost his sister Christiana at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, shared his harrowing experience of searching for her in the aftermath of the shooting. “October 1st, we ran,” Duarte recounted, detailing the agonizing days that followed before learning of his sister’s death.

LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill also addressed the crowd, acknowledging the profound impact the event had on law enforcement. “Our job is to save lives,” he stated, “And I know that for me personally, I will always be haunted by the lives we could not save.”

Music played a significant role in the commemoration, with a performer who was present at the festival that night sharing his emotional journey back to the stage. He described his initial reluctance to attend the ceremony, which he overcame after encouragement from the event organizer.

For Duarte, finding the strength to speak came from a rekindled faith. “I lost all faith in God seven years ago,” he admitted, “but as I lost faith, it was mostly anger. Anger is good because God listens, even when you’re angry.”

The Sunrise Remembrance Ceremony provided a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of Las Vegas. The community continues to grapple with the tragedy, finding ways to honor the victims while supporting one another on the path toward healing.
