Southern Nevada Health District on Alert as CDC Tracks 1,600+ Cyclospora Parasite Infections Nationwide

LAS VEGAS, NV — Regional epidemiologists are stepping up localized surveillance protocols this morning as federal public health teams track an aggressive, multi-state outbreak of a severe foodborne intestinal parasite.
While infections are mounting across dozens of jurisdictions, Southern Nevada health grids currently report zero localized ties to the primary active outbreak clusters.
The Scope of the National Outbreak
According to the latest surveillance summaries unsealed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), health agencies have logged 1,645 laboratory-confirmed domestic cases of cyclosporiasis across 34 states since the seasonal tracking window opened on May 1. The outbreak has already resulted in at least 141 hospitalizations nationwide.
The disease is triggered by Cyclospora cayetanensis, a microscopic, single-celled parasite that contaminates fresh produce through exposure to infected water grids or agricultural agricultural runoff during harvesting periods. Once ingested, the parasite takes hold in the human digestive system, causing prolonged watery diarrhea, extreme fatigue, severe stomach cramps, nausea, and rapid weight loss that can persist for weeks if left untreated.

Preventative Mandates Issued to Local Food Operators
Because Las Vegas acts as a massive international culinary hub, importing millions of pounds of fresh fruits and raw vegetables weekly to supply the resort corridor, the Southern Nevada Health District is aggressively working with commercial restaurant suppliers. Although health officials confirm that Nevada has managed to avoid the current outbreak clusters, local physicians warn that general summer parasite activity is tracking higher than historical baselines.
Public health leads stress that standard chemical rinses, vinegar, and commercial vegetable washes are scientifically unproven to kill or fully eradicate Cyclospora oocysts from the surface of contaminated leafy greens or soft berries.
Suppliers and home cooks are being firmly directed to clean all raw fruits and vegetables thoroughly under high-pressure, clean running water to physically dislodge the microscopic hitchhikers. Additionally, health inspectors are mandating that any cut or prepared fresh produce must be completely refrigerated within a two-hour window to prevent systemic bacterial acceleration.
