TikTok Turmoil: Las Vegas Business Thrives Amid Social Media Uncertainty

The fate of TikTok continues to hang in the balance, sending shockwaves through the business community. For Marsean and Trish Nelson, owners of the popular TasteBudz Creole Kitchen in Las Vegas, the rollercoaster ride of bans, reinstatements, and political wrangling underscores the power and peril of relying on social media to grow a business.
TikTok has been a game-changer for the Nelsons, transforming their humble food truck into a Las Vegas hotspot with three thriving storefronts. The platform introduced them to influencers like Keith Lee and Flo Rida, whose endorsements catapulted TasteBudz to fame. Today, their TikTok account boasts nearly 45,000 followers and over a million views, driving a substantial portion of their customer base.
According to Marsean, “A quarter to a third of our customers come from social media, and on weekends, it can be even more.” Customers have even planned entire trips to Las Vegas just to visit their restaurant.
TikTok’s Ban: A Wake-Up Call for Small Businesses
When TikTok was briefly banned in the U.S. last weekend, the Nelsons and countless others faced the harsh reality of social media dependency. “We post daily, so it was crazy. We didn’t know what to expect,” said Marsean, recalling the moment his daughter cried over the ban.
Though TikTok was reinstated by Sunday morning, the uncertainty remains. The Supreme Court and U.S. lawmakers have ruled in favor of the ban, but President Donald Trump has granted TikTok’s parent company an additional 90 days to sell its U.S. operations and avoid future restrictions.
Despite the temporary reprieve, the Nelsons understand the need for adaptability. “Winners and champions don’t make excuses; they make adjustments,” Marsean said. They’ve already diversified their offerings, launching a successful seasoning line, and are exploring other marketing strategies to mitigate future risks.
Lessons for Entrepreneurs: Adapt, Diversify, and Thrive
The Nelsons’ story highlights an important lesson for entrepreneurs: social media is a powerful tool, but it’s no substitute for a diversified strategy. The couple urges fellow business owners to explore other marketing avenues while continuing to leverage platforms like TikTok to connect with audiences.
“We hope and pray that they don’t take TikTok away for good,” said Marsean. “But we’ll keep pushing forward no matter what.”
