Utah’s Intermountain Healthcare Eyes Partnership for Southern Nevada Children’s Hospital

Las Vegas, Nevada – Utah’s largest healthcare provider, Intermountain Healthcare, has expressed interest in collaborating on a standalone children’s hospital project in Southern Nevada. This news comes from a recent study conducted by Tripp Umbach for UNLV’s Lincy Institute, which analyzed the region’s need for a full-service pediatric facility.

The proposed 150-bed children’s hospital is estimated to cost $1 billion to construct. According to the Umbach report, it could create nearly 12,000 jobs and generate $58.2 million in state and local taxes over five years. The facility would also address a significant gap in the area’s pediatric healthcare providers. Currently, Nevada has 267 pediatricians to serve 640,000 children under the age of 18.

The study suggests that the Harry Reid Technology Center at UNLV in southwest Las Vegas would be an ideal location for the hospital.

“While we are still in the early stages of feasibility and needs assessment, the location will ultimately be determined by the partnerships formed,” said Tripp Umbach. “We are actively seeking collaborations with local and national organizations to develop a comprehensive plan that will guide the project, including site selection.”

Umbach anticipates that a new children’s hospital could be operational by 2030.

Brad Gillman, a spokesperson for Intermountain Healthcare, echoed the findings of the report and emphasized the importance of collaboration to enhance children’s healthcare in Las Vegas.

“While no final decisions have been made regarding specific facility types, we agree that the information presented in the report highlights the need for improved pediatric care in Southern Nevada,” Gillman stated.
