RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – The Mega Millions jackpot increased to an estimated $640 million on Wednesday as another drawing went unclaimed.
No one won the top prize in the lottery game on Tuesday night, making it 21 straight games in which no one matched all six numbers. The next drawing will take place on Friday night.
The massive jackpot comes less than two months after the highest lottery prize ever won, a $2.04 billion Powerball prize won in California on Nov. 8. So yet, no one has come forward to collect the grand reward.
The reason for all the high rewards is simple: long odds assure few winners, and lengthy streaks of lottery futility allow jackpots to grow larger and greater week after week.
The chances of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.6 million.
The stated prize of $640 million is for a winner who chooses to be paid in yearly installments over 29 years. Almost all winners choose the cash option, which for Friday’s drawing is expected to be $328.3 million.
Mega Millions is available in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C. and the United States. The British Virgin Islands. Tickets may be purchased at Gold Ranch, Truckee, Markleeville, and Hallelujah Junction.
