Swatting Incident Causes Police Activity at University of Nevada, Reno Campus

NEVADA – On Sunday evening, police activity at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) was prompted by a swatting incident, according to authorities. The incident has been confirmed as a hoax, known as “swatting”, which is a form of harassment that involves making false reports to emergency lines in order to generate an emergency law enforcement response. Swatters often report a violent emergency situation, such as a shooting or hostage situation, in order to cause chaos.
The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity on campus to the non-emergency dispatch number at 775-334-COPS. This is not the first swatting incident to occur in northern Nevada, as multiple schools in the area have gone into lockdown due to similar incidents earlier this year.
