Two People Have Been Arrested on Charges of Grand Theft Auto and Conspiracy to Set a Vehicle on Fire

NEVADA – Nevada State Police say two people were caught in Carson City earlier this month after they tried to set a stolen car on fire to trick an insurance company.

On September 2, 2022, at about 6:24 a.m., the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol got a call about a car left at the intersection of Golf Club Drive and US-50 West under the Carson City underpass.

The person who called said that an Audi SUV with an unknown license plate was facing the wrong way in the travel lane and might be on fire.

During the first investigation of the scene, the passenger area of the car was found to be burned, and there was a strong smell of gasoline from inside the car.

It was also found out that the car had been reported stolen earlier in the day from the Reno, Nevada area.

Several Nevada State Police Divisions, such as the Highway Patrol Division, the Investigation Division, and the State Fire Marshal, worked together to do more investigating.

The investigation showed that there was a good chance that the registered owners of the car, Dale and Stephanie Chapman, worked with someone else to help steal the car and set it on fire to trick their insurance company.

The following people were arrested on September 8, 2022, on the following charges:

Stephanie Chapman was accused of planning to start a fire in the third degree. Grand Theft of an Auto by Conspiracy.

Dale Chapman was accused of planning to start a fire in the third degree. Grand Theft of an Auto by Conspiracy.

The Carson City Detention Facility took both suspects in. The investigation is still ongoing, and more charges and arrests will likely be made.
