Las Vegas Hits 100 Degrees: Triple Digits Arrive Two Weeks Ahead of Schedule
By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, May 9, 2026 1:56 pm
LAS VEGAS, NV — The “Century Mark” has officially been reached. An intense high-pressure system settling over Southern Nevada pushed temperatures to 38°C (100°F) late Saturday afternoon, marking the first triple-digit day of 2026.
Breaking Historical Averages
The arrival of 100-degree heat on May 9 comes more than two weeks earlier than the historical average of May 24. Meteorologists noted that while today remains uncomfortably hot, the valley is currently in the grip of a “weather whiplash” that transitioned the region from breezy spring conditions to mid-summer intensity in less than 48 hours.
HeatRisk and Safety Protocols
A Moderate HeatRisk remains in effect through Sunday evening. Health officials and the National Weather Service are issuing the following guidance for residents and visitors:
-
Peak Hours: Limit strenuous outdoor activities between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
-
Hydration: Officials urge residents to hydrate proactively, rather than waiting until the onset of thirst.
-
Vulnerable Populations: Check on elderly neighbors and ensure pets are kept off hot pavement, which can cause severe paw burns within minutes.
Fire Danger Escalates
The rapid spike in temperature has significantly increased the risk of brush fires across the valley. With humidity levels dropping into the single digits, local fire crews are on high alert. Residents are reminded to avoid any activities that could produce sparks, including the use of outdoor grills near dry vegetation.
