Wind Outages, Flight Ground Stops, and Paused EDC Stages: The Valley Digests Sunday’s Extreme Gusts

LAS VEGAS, NV — Clean-up efforts are wrapping up across Clark County following a powerful windstorm that raked the region Sunday into Monday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed that a robust cold front hitting the valley triggered intense atmospheric turbulence, with a peak wind gust of 69 mph recorded at Allegiant Stadium. Outside the immediate valley, the highest regional gust topped out at a staggering 82 mph at the Hoover Dam.
EDC Stages Silenced Temporarily
The high-speed winds heavily impacted the final night of the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday night.
-
The Suspensions: Out of an abundance of caution for structural rigging and heavy overhead LED production equipment, organizers temporarily paused music at major stages including the Circuit Grounds, BassPod, and Quantum Valley.
-
Ride Shutdowns: All carnival rides were completely halted during the worst of the gusts.
-
The Precedent: While the closures caused immediate frustration on social media, the measures successfully prevented the structural collapses or mass evacuations seen during the high-wind crises of 2012, 2019, and 2025. The rest of the festival grounds remained active until the morning conclusion.
Airport Chaos: Ground Stop and Fallen Walls
The transport infrastructure grid bore the brunt of the storm’s midday peak on Sunday:
-
The Ground Stop: At Harry Reid International Airport, gusts exceeding 60 mph severely reduced visibility due to blowing dust and created dangerous crosswinds. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) instituted a mandatory ground stop on departures Sunday evening.
-
Mass Delays: FlightAware tracked 457 delayed flights passing through Reid International before the ground stop was officially lifted at 11:40 PM.
-
Terminal Damage: On Level 2 leading to the Terminal 1 parking garage, a massive temporary construction wall buckled and blew over completely under the force of the wind. Airport personnel quickly rerouted pedestrian traffic to a lower level to clear the debris.
Localized Power Outages and Summerlin Real Estate Damage
NV Energy crews spent Monday restoring power to scattered neighborhoods across the valley after downed trees snapped local lines.
-
The Hit: At its peak, nearly 1,000 customers were left completely in the dark. The largest concentration occurred near West Washington Avenue and North Jones Boulevard, where downed poles cut power to roughly 900 properties.
-
Finals Canceled: In the northwest, Faith Lutheran High School was forced to completely cancel its scheduled Monday morning final exams after a localized transformer failure left the entire campus without electricity.
-
Summerlin Blockage: Commuters in Summerlin faced delays early Monday morning after a massive tree uprooted overnight, entirely blocking the right lane of northbound Sageberry Drive, just south of Far Hills Avenue.
The NWS notes that while the extreme wind shift knocked local high temperatures down to a brisk 78°F on Monday—roughly 10 degrees below the valley normal—conditions have now stabilized into a typical seasonal breeze.
