LAS VEGAS, NV — Traffic investigators with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Collision Investigation Section have unsealed criminal records on Monday following a devastating weekend hit-and-run collision that pushed the valley’s 2026 traffic death toll higher.

The violent multi-vehicle wreck, which occurred at a high-volume intersection in the eastern valley corridor, resulted in the immediate arrest of an impaired driver who attempted to escape the scene on foot.

The Red-Light T-Bone Wreck

The emergency sequence originally unfolded at the intersection of East Tropicana Avenue and Tamarus Street, located just west of South Eastern Avenue. According to data retrieved by specialized accident reconstruction teams, 22-year-old Jerry Hughes was operating a high-performance 2021 Dodge Charger eastbound on Tropicana Avenue at an extreme rate of speed.

As Hughes approached the intersection, he completely bypassed a solid red traffic control signal, driving directly into the intersection. The Dodge Charger broadsided a 2003 Toyota Camry that was executing a lawful turning sequence. The force of the T-bone impact crushed the driver’s side compartment of the sedan, causing fatal trauma to the occupant. Paramedics and medical crews arrived within minutes, but the 36-year-old male driver of the Camry was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Foot Pursuit and Felony CCDC Booking

Following the catastrophic impact, Hughes abandoned his disabled vehicle and fled the crash scene on foot into a nearby residential area. Patrol units quickly established a perimeter, tracking Hughes down several blocks away.

Traffic officers evaluating Hughes detected immediate physical signs of heavy narcotics and alcohol impairment. Following blood draws and a mandatory medical evaluation at an area hospital, Hughes was formally booked into the Clark County Detention Center (CCDC).

He faces multiple severe felony counts, including DUI resulting in death, duty to stop at the scene of an accident involving death (hit-and-run), and reckless driving. Traffic commanders confirmed this crash officially marks Fatal #54 handled by the department’s traffic bureau during the 2026 calendar year.
