As Gavin Newsom Invades Nevada, Democrats Roll Out the Red Carpet for California’s Failed Agenda

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, July 10, 2026 6:00 am

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is bringing his political tour to Nevada this week, giving Republicans what they believe is the clearest possible illustration of the choice facing Silver State voters in 2026.
Newsom, widely viewed as a leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, is scheduled to campaign with Nevada Democrats, including Reps. Dina Titus, Susie Lee, and Steven Horsford, as the party looks to energize its base ahead of the midterm elections.
For Republicans, however, Newsom’s visit isn’t an asset, it’s a warning.
After nearly eight years as California’s governor, Newsom’s record has become synonymous with soaring living costs, crushing taxes, rising homelessness, and an affordability crisis that has pushed families and businesses to leave the Golden State in search of better opportunities elsewhere.
While California continues struggling with some of the nation’s highest housing costs, gas prices, utility bills, and tax burdens, Republicans argue Nevada has moved in the opposite direction under Gov. Joe Lombardo, who recently celebrated Nevada leading the nation in year-over-year job growth.
That contrast is exactly why Republicans believe Newsom’s appearance could become a political liability for vulnerable Nevada Democrats.
Rather than distancing themselves from California’s progressive policies, Titus, Lee, and Horsford are embracing one of the Democratic Party’s most recognizable liberal figures as they campaign for reelection.
Republicans say that sends a clear message about where Nevada Democrats stand.
For years, GOP candidates have warned that Democrats want to turn Nevada into California. Now, they argue, Democrats are literally bringing California’s governor across the border to campaign on behalf of the party’s candidates.
NRCC Spokesman Christian Martinez said Newsom’s visit perfectly illustrates the direction Nevada Democrats want to take the state.
“Gavin Newsom turned California into a national punchline: unaffordable, unsafe, and bleeding families and businesses. Now Dina Titus, Susie Lee, and Steven Horsford are rolling out the red carpet for this clown, desperate to import his toxic, failed agenda. Nevadans didn’t ask for California’s garbage to be dumped across the border.”
Newsom’s appearance comes as Nevada Democrats are already facing increasing political headwinds.
President Donald Trump carried Nevada in 2024, the first Republican presidential victory in the Silver State in two decades. Republicans have continued gaining voter registration, while recent polling has shown strong support for Trump’s tax cuts, tougher immigration enforcement, and economic agenda.
Meanwhile, Democrats continue defending votes against No Tax on Tips, border security legislation, and other issues Republicans believe resonate with Nevada’s working-class electorate.
For Republicans, Newsom’s record only sharpens those contrasts.
California has experienced years of outmigration as residents and businesses relocated to states with lower taxes and lower costs of living. The state’s persistent homelessness crisis, high cost of housing, and rising utility bills have become recurring talking points for Republicans nationwide, who argue those problems are the predictable result of progressive governance.
Now, they say, Nevada Democrats are embracing the politician most closely associated with that model.
The visit is also expected to fuel speculation about Newsom’s own political ambitions. Although he has denied actively campaigning for the presidency, Newsom has become one of the Democratic Party’s most visible national surrogates, frequently traveling to battleground states and positioning himself as one of the party’s leading voices.
Republicans believe Nevada voters will see something different.
Not a fresh messenger.
But the face of the policies they rejected in 2024.
As the campaign enters its final months, Republicans are betting that the image of Titus, Lee, and Horsford campaigning alongside Gavin Newsom will become one of the defining contrasts of the election.

Their argument is simple: if voters wanted California’s agenda, they wouldn’t have moved to Nevada.
