LAS VEGAS, NV — Nearly three decades after a fatal drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip captivated the global music industry, jury selection officially commenced Monday morning in the murder trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis.
The proceedings inside the Regional Justice Center in downtown Las Vegas represent the culmination of a decades-long homicide investigation into the September 1996 death of rap legend Tupac Shakur.
Decades-Old Homicide Reaches Clark County District Court
Davis, 63, has been charged with murder with a deadly weapon with intent to promote, further, or assist a criminal gang. Prosecutors contend that Davis served as the ringleader who provided the firearm and ordered the shooting following a brawl inside the MGM Grand.
Presiding Clark County District Court Judge Carli Kierny oversaw the start of jury selection on Monday, a process expected to take several days given the extensive media coverage and public notoriety surrounding the case. Opening statements are scheduled to follow once a 12-member panel and alternates are sworn in.
