RENO, NV — Emergency wildland response crews face severe containment challenges across northern Washoe County as the Bug Fire expanded to 70,757 acres after merging with the Fred Mountain Fire, prompting extended Level 3 “EVACUATE NOW” directives for thousands of rural residents.

Driven by high-desert sagebrush fuels, steep terrain, and afternoon wind gusts, the fire’s eastward surge toward Winnemucca Ranch Road and Palomino Valley has created heavy smoke plumes across the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area.

Multi-Agency Defense Lines and Air Support

Interagency wildland commanders have deployed heavy air assets, including Nevada Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, alongside Cal Fire air tankers. Ground crews from Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF), and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) continue constructing defensive handlines to protect threatened structures along valley floors.

With the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approving a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG), federal funds are reimbursing up to 75% of state and local suppression costs to maintain continuous field operations.

“Commanders are concentrating heavy air drops and engine strike teams along eastern access corridors to establish anchor points,” emergency operations officials noted. “Structure protection remains our top priority.”
