Washoe County Schools Shuttered Valley-Wide as Reno-Sparks Convention Center Mobilizes for Thousands of Hawk Fire Evacuees

RENO, NV — In response to the uncontained 15,000-acre Hawk Fire bearing down on the northwest edges of the Truckee Meadows, the Washoe County School District (WCSD) cancelled all classes, athletic events, and extracurricular activities across the region. Concurrently, county emergency management activated the Reno-Sparks Convention Center as the primary regional evacuation facility for displaced residents.

The district-wide shutdown affects tens of thousands of students across Reno and Sparks, sparing only the remote rural Gerlach K-12 School situated far to the north.

Widespread Academic and Campus Cancellations

District officials issued the closure directive following direct consultations with regional emergency operations commanders, citing mandatory evacuation zones that encompass student and staff neighborhoods, widespread transportation disruptions, hazardous particulate air quality, and the necessity of keeping critical thoroughfares clear for emergency apparatus.

The educational shutdown extends beyond traditional public campuses. Regional private academies, charter school networks, and Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) suspended all in-person classes. The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), while positioned just outside the active Level 3 evacuation boundary, enacted continuous air filtration monitoring and implemented emergency contingency protocols across its residential halls.

“As a result of the Hawk Fire and at the request of public safety officials, all classes, events, and activities at all WCSD schools—except Gerlach K-12—are canceled,” the district stated in an emergency alert to families. “This decision protects our families, accounts for regional public safety impacts, and ensures emergency vehicles have unobstructed access across transit corridors.”

Shelter Mobilization at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center

Inside Hall 4 of the Reno-Sparks Convention Center (4590 S. Virginia St), the American Red Cross Northern Nevada Chapter, the Salvation Army, and county human service workers established cots, medical triage stations, meal services, and communication hubs.

Evacuees are instructed to enter through Door 20F on the Kietzke Lane side. While the facility is equipped to handle individuals with basic medical apparatus like oxygen concentrators, authorities noted that specialized medical needs are being coordinated directly with regional hospitals.

To maintain hygiene and space inside the arena, pets are not permitted inside Hall 4. Domestic pets are being housed at Washoe County Regional Animal Services on Longley Lane, while displaced horses and livestock are being staged at the Ironwood Event Center in Palomino Valley. Several Reno casino resort properties have also stepped forward, offering reduced lodging rates to help shelter displaced residents and their families.
