The Fight Over AI’s Power Bill Moves to the Strip

The gathering arrives at a crucial moment for both the tech sector and host state Nevada.

With capital committed to AI computing infrastructure crossing $1 trillion globally, regional utility transmission queues are backed up for years.

The primary friction point has shifted from municipal utility commissions directly into statehouses: determining whether tech hyperscalers or everyday residential ratepayers will pay for high-voltage substations, battery banks, and new power generation.

The issue erupted into Nevada’s 2026 gubernatorial contest days ago when Governor Joe Lombardo signed an executive order curbing state tax abatements for hyperscale server campuses, requiring future applicants to fund public education and prove zero negative impacts on local water resources and electricity rates.
