According to an arrest report, a man is accused of driving through security gates at Harry Reid International Airport and making a bomb threat to attract the attention of police because he believed cartel members were after him.
Sergio Magana, 36, was arrested after driving to the airport on Thursday, Aug. 25, breaching a security gate and driving on the tarmac until he was stopped by a Metro officer. He allegedly told the officer who stopped him, “I’m trying to get your attention, I’ve been looking for you.”
According to the report, he then held up an aerosol can wrapped in duct tape and told the officer, “I got a bomb right here.”
Magana was arrested by police shortly after. According to police, as he was being arrested, he stated, “people were after me, and I came looking straight for you! ”
The Department of Aviation K9 team discovered no explosives in Magana’s vehicle.
According to the report, Magana told police that people from the cartel were coming in and out of the convenience store where he works during his graveyard shift, “giving him a threatening look and never saying a word to him.”
He told police that he had had enough of it the day of the incident and wanted to tell a police officer, so he drove to a location where he knew officers would be, according to the report. Magana stated that he had no intention of harming anyone and that he only wanted to inform the police about the cartel members.
According to the report, Magana stated that he had worked for an airline for several years and was aware of the access gate used to break into the secured area.
Air traffic was temporarily stopped while the incident was investigated. Magana was charged with destroying property worth more than $5,000, communicating a bomb threat, and using a hoax bomb to cause a building evacuation.
He is currently being held on $5,000 bail at the Clark County Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
