NEVADA – North Lyon County Fire said that fixed-wing aircraft are dropping retardant on the perimeter to help stop the fire from spreading or damaging the train tracks.
Near the fire, Highway 50 is closed, and first responders tell people to stay away from the scene until further notice.
At about 4 p.m. on Wednesday, the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office got multiple 911 calls saying that large stacks of railroad ties in the town of Hazen were on fire.
Several groups are working to put out the fire 12 miles southeast of Fernley.
A spokesperson for the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office said, “The combination of the dry, hot weather and the amount of fuel (railroad ties) in that industrial yard has led to a very hot and dangerous fire.” “We want you to stay away from the area if you can. Also, if you see an emergency vehicle running with its emergency lights on and possibly its siren on, please pull over to the right and stop. This is not only polite and could save a life, but it is the law.
