Date of Hearing for Former UNLV Recruit Charged With Fatal Accident

RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – A preliminary hearing has been scheduled on April 6 for a former University of Nevada, Las Vegas basketball recruit accused of driving drunk and causing a fatal crash nearly two years ago.

Prosecutors said Zaon Collins, a former Las Vegas high school standout, is charged with DUI and reckless driving resulting in death in the Dec. 30, 2020 collision.

According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, Collins was 19 at the time of the incident and was driving approximately 90 mph in a 35-mph zone.

Eric Echevarria, 52, the driver of the second automobile, died as a result of his injuries.

Collins was found with a leafy green material in his vehicle, and he had indications of cannabis intoxication, according to police.

Authorities stated a blood test subsequently indicated that Collins had 3.0 nanograms per milliliter of THC in his blood, although the legal limit at the time was 2.0 nanograms.

The Clark County District Attorney’s Office stated that the matter will be pursued through a preliminary hearing, in which a judge examines the prosecution’s evidence and determines if it is adequate for establishing probable cause and continuing to trial.

According to KSNV, Echevarria’s widow is suing Collins for wrongful death. A status hearing in the lawsuit is set for February 21.
