RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – Residents in Reno may get free sand and sandbags to help them prepare for inclement weather.
Beginning Monday night through early Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has projected an Atmospheric River Pattern for the Greater Reno-Tahoe area. Residents are asked to prepare for the storm by cleaning debris from drainages and ditches in preparation for increasing water flows. Strong winds can be prepared for by anchoring outside furniture, temporary building structures, and canopies.
The city is supplying sandbags and sand at seven locations, all of which are open 24 hours a day:
- City of Reno Corporation Yard, outside the gate, located at 1640 East Commercial Row.
- Mira Loma Park, south end of the parking lot, located at 3000 S. McCarran Blvd.
- Jack Tighe Memorial Fields, in the parking lot, located at 325 VFW Historic Lane.
- Moya Boulevard near the intersection of Red Baron Boulevard.
- Reno Fire Station #5 (Mayberry Fire Station), located at 1500 Mayberry Drive, in the parking lot.
- Horseman’s Park, in the parking lot located at 2800 Pioneer Drive.
- Idlewild Park, in the parking lot of the James D. Hoff Peace Officer Memorial located at 2055 Idlewild Drive.
Residents are responsible for filling their own bags and should bring their own shovels. Each place has empty bags and sand.
Limited numbers of pre-filled bags for persons with disabilities will be available at the Corporation Yard, 1640 East Commercial Row, beginning Dec. 27 at 7 a.m. Officials from the city stress that while the goods are free, individuals should only take what they need.
The City of Reno Utility Services staff will monitor the irrigation ditches and ensure that personnel are ready to remove debris as needed to maximize flow. Officials said the city is ready to respond to local drainage issues and has traffic signs ready for impacted routes.
