RTC Begins Construction on New Rapid Station Near Peppermill Casino

RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – On Monday, January 23, work is scheduled to start on a new RAPID transit station being built by Washoe County’s Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) on Virginia Street, just across from the Peppermill Casino.

The stop will be a stop on the RAPID Virginia Line transit line operated by the RTC.

Level-boarding, LED lighting, real-time schedule updates, waiting area seats, weather protection, and other amenities are all available at the RAPID stop. On weekdays, the RAPID Virginia Line provides a rapid and practical way to transit the Virginia Street corridor from Meadowood Mall to the University of Nevada, Reno. It operates roughly every ten minutes.

“The RTC’s RAPID Virginia Line route is the busiest route on our transit system, so being able to support that ridership with the amenities and conveniences of a RAPID station is very important to us,” said RTC Director of Public Transportation and Operations Mark Maloney. “We know a lot of people use this stop to get to work, shopping, entertainment, dining, and more, and it’s time that we upgrade it to a RAPID station to encourage people to continue to choose to take transit.”

Beginning with demolishing the current bus stop, Q&D Construction will then move forward from the rear of the new station toward the road. Two through lanes will remain available for the bulk of the work being done during construction thanks to traffic control, but there may be occasions when the construction crew has to do additional work, in which case lanes may close or relocate. During construction, Virginia Street’s east side sidewalk will be blocked off, and at the Peppermill and Brinkby junctions, pedestrians will be directed to the west side of the street.

In and around the work zone, motorists, pedestrians, and bikers are urged to use greater caution.

An investment of $1.7 million has been made in the project for the neighborhood.
