Nevada State Senator Introduces Bill to Combat Catalytic Converter Thefts

NEVADA – During a recent hearing for her statewide bill, Nevada State Senator introduced SB243, aimed at curbing the costly and damaging thefts of catalytic converters. The proposed legislation would result in felony charges for individuals in possession of two or more used converters who are not licensed or authorized to have them, with potential sentences ranging from one to ten years in prison.

The bill also requires authorized purchases of used converters from licensed or authorized businesses exclusively, in an effort to combat the lucrative black market for the precious metals found within these essential vehicle components. Thieves can quickly remove converters and sell them for significant profit due to the value of these metals, which are used to clean a car’s exhaust.

The senator hopes that this new legislation will help to deter would-be thieves and prevent these costly thefts, which can result in repair costs of up to thousands of dollars for uninsured car owners. The bill represents a critical step towards protecting Nevada’s drivers and their property.
