Nevada Senator Wants FTC And USDA To Crack Down On Rising Egg Prices

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, February 2, 2023 11:51 am

Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada is urging the FTC and USDA to take action to address rising egg prices and prevent price gouging.

According to Instacart, egg costs in Nevada exceed $6 a dozen, much beyond the national average.

“As grocery costs for critical commodities continue to rise, I echo previous demands for the Biden Administration to analyze markets and investigate any potential illegal pricing manipulation in the egg sector,” Senator Cortez Masto wrote. “…I urge both of your agencies to strengthen coordination and monitoring efforts to guarantee that American households and small businesses pay fair grocery costs.”

She urged the agencies to provide “clear and frequent communication to the public with updates on steps made to counteract this market volatility” in her letter.

She also recommended that Congress get timely recommendations for action items to address the issue. Masto blamed the increase in egg costs on a variety of issues, including avian flu, and encouraged the Biden administration to use all available resources to solve the issue.
