Nevada – A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, as a house fire on the 500 block of Shoshone St. in Carson City left one child dead and another hospitalized. Samantha Rose Paulino, 23, the mother of the children, is now facing multiple charges, including open murder and child abuse causing substantial bodily harm.
The Carson City Fire Department responded to the scene just after noon upon receiving a report of a fire on tribal land. Upon arrival, the house was found to be engulfed in flames, with neighbors informing authorities that two children who were often left alone might be trapped inside the house. Despite multiple attempts to rescue anyone inside, firefighters had to enter the house where they found two unresponsive children, aged 2 and 3.
The children were rushed to Carson Tahoe Hospital for treatment, where the 3-year-old girl later died. The 2-year-old boy remains in critical condition but is expected to survive. Meanwhile, Paulino returned to the house while firefighters were battling the blaze and informed authorities that she had left the kids home alone to go register for college classes. Her 8-year-old child was in school at the time of the incident.
Washoe Tribal Police took Paulino into custody, but it was later determined that she wasn’t of tribal heritage, so she was transferred to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. The father of the children, Aldean Street Jr., was reportedly working in Fernley when the fire broke out.
Paulino now faces charges of open murder and child abuse causing substantial bodily harm. She is being held without bail. The Red Cross provided physical and emotional support at the scene, and authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
