NEVADA – An 84-year-old woman from Sparks, Nevada suffered a traumatic brain injury after being pushed to the ground by a local firefighter while feeding feral cats, according to a lawsuit filed in the Second Judicial District Court. The suit alleges that firefighter Timothy Egan grabbed Maureen Hvegholm’s shoulders and swept her feet from under her, causing her to fall and hit her head on the concrete. Hvegholm was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury.
The lawsuit claims that the incident occurred on December 8, 2022, while Hvegholm was feeding the cats across the alley from Sparks Fire Station #1 on Victorian Ave. The suit alleges that Egan grabbed the cat food and water from the ground and from Hvegholm’s hands, prompting her to swat at him. Egan has not been charged with a crime.
Hvegholm is suing Egan in his personal capacity and is seeking compensation for her injuries. The Sparks City Council voted to retain a law firm to defend Egan against the lawsuit. The city declined to comment on the pending litigation, and the law firm did not respond to a request for comment. The incident was captured on surveillance cameras from two different angles, and the footage is available online.
