LAS VEGAS – A Las Vegas hotel maid, Amanda Melendez, has been accused of stealing more than $1 million worth of jewelry from a guest’s room, leading to her arrest on charges of grand larceny, burglary, and conspiracy to commit burglary, according to an arrest report.
The incident took place at the Vdara hotel, where three men staying in the room reported the burglary on May 7. They discovered their bags inside-out, beds half-made, and cleaning supplies left behind upon returning to the room that night. The stolen items included two Rolex watches, an Audemars Piguet watch, a Cartier watch, diamond Cuban link chains, bracelets, and a gold ring.
An investigation conducted by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police identified Amanda Melendez as the housekeeper present in the room that night. Phone records revealed her communication with a prison inmate on May 6, discussing the cleaning of a room with valuable jewelry matching the stolen items. The inmate directed Melendez to take everything and leave using a ride-share service.
Melendez initially denied any knowledge of the stolen property during questioning. However, subsequent phone conversations between Melendez and the inmate confirmed their agreement to keep the stolen items.
Melendez has since posted bond, and a status check hearing is scheduled for June 20.
