Woman Found Deceased, Evidence Points to Bear Encounter

NEVADA – The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office deputies are actively investigating the discovery of a deceased woman in her home, with evidence pointing to a subsequent encounter with a bear. The authorities, including the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, are working together to uncover the details of this unsettling incident.

Prompted by concerns raised by a person who noticed her absence, deputies conducted a welfare check on 71-year-old Downieville resident Patrice Miller on Nov. 8. After forcibly entering the home, they found her lifeless body.

Preliminary findings indicate that Miller passed away before a bear, possibly attracted by scent or other factors, entered the residence. The authorities are determined to determine the cause of her death and piece together the events leading up to this tragic incident, collaborating with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Residents in the Downieville area are strongly advised to exercise caution and take necessary precautions to avoid potential encounters with wildlife. Recommendations include securing ground-level doors and windows at night, locking vehicles, and removing outside food sources, such as garbage.
