Las Vegas Man Sentenced for Killing His 96-Year-Old Father Over Argument About Bald Men

In a bizarre and deeply unsettling case out of Las Vegas, 71-year-old Oris Jones has been sentenced to six to fifteen years in prison for killing his 96-year-old father, Richard Jones, during a heated argument about bald men. The tragic incident occurred in July 2020 at their shared home near Tropicana Avenue and Durango Drive in the southwest valley.
The fight reportedly began when Oris, watching a television show featuring comedian Steve Harvey, became agitated as his father spoke disparagingly about Harvey and bald men. According to police, the argument escalated violently, leaving Richard Jones with multiple head injuries and a cut on his ear, ultimately leading to his death.
In court, Oris Jones pleaded guilty but mentally ill to voluntary manslaughter, with an enhancement due to his father’s age. The plea agreement stipulated a sentence of six to fifteen years, which Clark County District Court Judge Tierra Jones confirmed during Thursday’s sentencing. Oris Jones declined to speak when asked if he had anything to say in his defense.
Jones’ attorney expressed hope that his client would continue receiving mental health treatment while in prison. Under Nevada law, a guilty-but-mentally-ill plea requires the defense to prove their client’s mental illness, allowing judges to incorporate mental health treatment into sentencing.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked mental health issues and the responsibility to seek help before such tragedies unfold. How can we better identify and address mental health struggles to prevent violent outcomes like this?
