Vegas Greenlights $2.7 Million Streetlight Overhaul for High-Injury Corridors

LAS VEGAS, NV — The Las Vegas City Council has moved to brighten some of the valley’s most dangerous roads, awarding a $2.7 million contract to MC4 Construction for a massive LED streetlight upgrade. The project targets the city’s “High Injury Network,” where a disproportionate number of severe and fatal crashes occur.

According to city data, approximately 77% of fatal traffic injuries in Las Vegas happen on just 11% of its streets. This initiative aims to combat those statistics by replacing aging amber and first-generation LED fixtures with next-generation luminaires designed to improve nighttime visibility for both drivers and pedestrians.

Focusing on the High-Injury Network

Construction is slated to begin this month, April 2026, with a primary focus on four major arteries identified as critical safety zones. Residents and commuters can expect to see crews working along the following corridors:

  • Buffalo Drive: From Sahara Avenue to Lone Mountain Road.

  • Charleston Boulevard: Specifically targeting high-traffic intersections.

  • Rainbow Boulevard: From Rancho Drive to Sahara Avenue.

  • Sahara Avenue: From Durango Drive to Boulder Highway.

A 120-Day Push for Safety

The project is estimated to take approximately 120 days to complete. Beyond just “swapping bulbs,” the upgrades utilize AI-compatible infrastructure that can eventually integrate with the city’s expanding Pedestrian Detection Pilot, which adjusts signal timing in real-time based on foot traffic.

The funding for this overhaul comes via a partnership with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC), marking a coordinated effort to reach the city’s “Vision Zero” goal of eliminating traffic fatalities by 2050.
