As Democrats Flee Graham Platner, Republicans Ask: Where Was Susie Lee Before the Scandal Became Politically Toxic?

Democrats are scrambling to distance themselves from Maine Senate nominee Graham Platner after a former girlfriend publicly accused him of sexual assault in an interview with Politico, allegations Platner has categorically denied. Within hours of the report’s publication, top Democrat leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee, and several of Platner’s highest-profile endorsers, called on him to end his campaign or withdrew their support.
For Republicans, however, the question is no longer why Democrats are abandoning Platner.
It’s why so many stood by him until the allegations became impossible to ignore.
Long before this week’s allegations surfaced, Platner had already faced a string of public controversies that drew national attention, including scrutiny over a tattoo with Nazi associations that he later covered, offensive online posts, and other behavior that prompted repeated questions about his judgment and fitness for office. Despite those controversies, prominent Democrats continued backing his candidacy in what was viewed as one of the party’s best pickup opportunities against Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
Now Republicans are expanding that criticism beyond Maine.
They argue vulnerable Democrats across the country, including Nevada Rep. Susie Lee, remained silent while Platner’s earlier controversies accumulated and only began distancing themselves once the race became politically untenable following the sexual assault allegation.
The allegation itself has fundamentally changed the race.
According to Politico, a former girlfriend accused Platner of sexually assaulting her in 2021 after entering her home intoxicated. Platner has denied the allegation, calling it “false” and saying he is considering the future of his campaign amid the political fallout.
The response from Democrat leaders was swift.
The Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee announced it would no longer invest in the Maine Senate race if Platner remained the nominee. Schumer, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and numerous Democrat elected officials called on him to withdraw, while several members of Congress rescinded endorsements they had previously offered. Even some of Platner’s most prominent progressive supporters concluded he should step aside.
Republicans argue that timing matters.
They contend Democrats tolerated earlier controversies because Platner was viewed as their strongest chance to flip a Republican-held Senate seat. Only after the latest allegation threatened the party’s political prospects, Republicans say, did Democrat leaders decide enough was enough.
RNC spokesman Nick Poche accused Lee and other Democrats of remaining silent until the political costs became too high.
“Susie Lee stayed silent through a Nazi tattoo and a string of disturbing controversies, proving she was willing to tolerate behavior that should have disqualified any candidate until it became a political liability. Voters deserve leaders guided by principle, not political convenience.”
The controversy comes as Democrats continue struggling to defend a series of politically difficult races heading into the 2026 midterms. Republicans have increasingly argued that Democrat leaders apply different standards depending on whether a candidate helps or hurts their chances of winning.
Whether Platner ultimately remains the Democrat nominee or withdraws, Republicans believe the episode has become a broader story about judgment, accountability, and political expediency.
For the GOP, the message is straightforward: if Democrat leaders are now saying Platner is unfit for office, they are asking why so many, including elected Democrats who never publicly broke with him, were willing to stand by him until the political consequences became impossible to ignore.
