OPINION: No Trust In Biden’s Antitrust Lawsuits

If you look at the entire Las Vegas Valley’s quantity of Amazon packages at each households’ doorsteps, I think our house would easily be in the top five. There is an Amazon package, or two, at our door every day. While this used to bother me, as the saying goes: “Happy wife, happy life.” 

My wife has been a busy mom and teacher for over 30 years. Now, as an assistant principal and grandma of two, she is not only busier than ever, but I have been told that our needs for toys for the grandkids, gifts, and party supplies for entertainment are apparently greater than ever. Because of this, we are doing whatever we can to make our lives easier. And as her husband, I do whatever I can to support her, including her love of online shopping. She loves looking for a good deal and comparing different websites that sell similar products to find the lowest price. I always love seeing the money we save at the end of each month on things we were going to buy anyway. 

Something I don’t love is all the political mailers that clutter up my mailbox, and then, subsequently, my recycling bin. My wife and I are registered Republicans and always exercise our right to vote, however we wouldn’t label ourselves as overly political. She especially ensures the candidates we support are pro-education. But with costs rising and the never-ending conversations about candidates with friends and family, debates on TV, and some candidates even knocking on our door, I can’t help but pay attention to their economic policies. 

In light of President Donald Trump’s announcement of JD Vance as his running mate, I did find it odd that a typically free-market Republican opposes my wife’s ability to shop on Amazon. In reading this article about JD Vance, I disagree that just because Amazon or other websites are “big” that that is somehow “wrong.” 

This led me to research further what President Biden’s thoughts are regarding online retailers and these so-called “antitrust” lawsuits. I discovered that the Biden Administration’s stance is no more than a phishing expedition, going after big tech companies like Google and Microsoft without a whole lot of evidence. This seems to be a trend, and I hope the American people can see right through this. 

While I have my own concerns about major corporations going “woke,” I stand with President Trump’s platform to slash regulations, cut taxes, secure fair trade deals, and champion innovation. Rather than punish or intimidate tech companies for being successful, we should let them do what they do best – develop, innovate, and grow America’s tech and AI sectors so we can continue to enjoy the latest and greatest technology. We can’t do that if these frivolous lawsuits continue. 

President Biden and the FTC are wrong about this being a trust issue. Shopping online through Amazon provides us access to smaller wholesalers and retailers we normally wouldn’t have. To have access to thousands of retailers at our fingertips without the need to drive to countless stores to compare prices is the epitome of competition.
