OPINION: What Would Jesus Say about Troy Regas’ Candidacy?

Troy Regas is running for Washoe County Commissioner in District 3.
In any other election, claiming that Jesus Christ would approve or disapprove of specific candidates would be considered an absurdly self-righteous statement.
However, since Troy Regas announced for office, a handful of outspoken (and biblically uninformed) conservative Christian voices, including some members of the Washoe County Republican Party, all of whom frequently traffic in self-righteous statements, have stepped forward to condemn Troy as biblically/morally unfit to hold elected office.
These false claims warrant a closer examination of Troy Regas’ qualifications for becoming a county commissioner.
Regas has consistently demonstrated the three critical qualities that are completely missing from all of the current County Commissioners, especially Troy’s opponent.
- Moral courage to publicly confront illegal and unethical behavior by public officials.
- Unselfish willingness to protect and serve the community he has loved – and lived in for most of his life.
- Leadership skills in solving problems.
Regas has a decades-long history of supporting community-building activities in the County. One of these is an annual Toy Drive that has brightened the Christmas season for 150,000 children for the past 46 years!
Regas’ most notable contribution, however, as a courageous community leader, occurred on May 31, 2020. Gathering up 200 of his motorcycle-riding friends, Troy and his group fearlessly confronted over 1,000 Black Lives Matter and Antifa protesters who were planning a second night of George Floyd-related violence to destroy downtown Reno.
Arm-in-arm, Troy’s group drew a line in the sand that the protesters were afraid to cross. The bikers’ fearless stand unnerved the rioters and they dispersed.
No lives were lost and property damage was averted, on a night when Reno’s Mayor and Police Chief were too cowardly to allow the Reno Police to protect our city.
What does this small but vicious group of conservative Christians and Republicans dislike so strongly about Troy Regas’ candidacy?
- The fact that over 20 years ago he managed a completely legal brothel in Nevada.
- The fact that Troy has liked riding motorcycles his entire life, and is currently the President of the Hells Angels motorcycle club in Reno.
That’s it.
- Troy’s critics make no mention of the fact that long ago he became a Christian, completely repented of his involvement with prostitution, and actively opposes it today.
- Troy’s opposition does not mention that he holds a responsible job managing a large floral business. He is raising a teenage son in a Christian school environment, and maintains a decades-long, committed relationship with his son’s mother.
The sad irony is that democrats haven’t had to say virtually anything against Troy’s increasingly popular candidacy. They don’t have to, because this persistent group of self-righteous Christian Republicans, are trying to tear down the one candidate in the entire state of Nevada whose election would create major changes for the better for everyone of both parties.
If you feel Troy Regas’ long-abandoned past has nothing to do with his proven fitness to be the strong, morally courageous voice we need on the County Commissioners Board: Vote for Troy Regas.
If you love Jesus, God, and His righteousness and hate the judgmental hypocrisy too-often found in religion AND politics: Vote for Troy Regas.
And if you happen to be one of the hypocritical, judgmental voices ignoring Regas’ qualifications for office and condemning him personally, I encourage you to do the following.
Look up the Bible references below. See what Jesus Christ DID say – and WOULD say about those who stand in judgment of others, while overlooking their own faults. It just might make you reconsider who to vote for.
______________________________________________________
- About judging and criticizing others more harshly and hypocritically than yourself: Matthew 7: 1-5 ; John 21: 21-22; John 8: 1-7
- About Jesus’ standard for forgiveness: Matthew 6:14-15; Matthew 18: 21-22; Matthew 15: 10-24.
- The sum total of times in the Bible that Jesus condemned self-righteousness and hypocrisy: 20 or more.
- The sum total of Jesus’ words condemning prostitution: ZERO
