Soros-Funded ProPublica Melts Down After Being Caught Intimidating Government Employees

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, December 30, 2025 6:00 am

By any honest definition, what ProPublica is doing isn’t journalism. It’s activism with a press badge and their latest meltdown proves it.

ProPublica is throwing a public tantrum after being called out for conduct that would get most reporters bounced from a newsroom: sending inquiries to government employees’ home addresses, personal cell phones, private emails, and even family members. That’s not “hard-hitting reporting.” That’s harassment.

And when they got caught? They doubled down.

According to ProPublica’s own reporting, on September 17, an Education Department official laid it out plainly — in writing, no less:

“Just heard from an ED colleague that you sent these inquiries in writing to their home address. This is highly inappropriate and unprofessional… You have also reached out to employees on their personal cell phones, emails, and even reached out to employee’s family members. This is disturbing. Do not use an employee’s home addresses or relatives to contact them.”

Clear. Direct. Correct.

ProPublica’s response the next day was jaw-dropping. Reporter Rob O’Matz brushed it off as “common practice” and claimed it was their “professional obligation.”

That’s nonsense — and they know it.

The official fired back with what should be Journalism 101:

“Reaching out to individuals about a work matter at their private address is not journalism — it is borderline intimidation… You are not entitled to a response from us, or anyone, ever.”

Exactly right.

This isn’t about access. It’s about power. ProPublica believes it’s entitled to answers, entitled to compliance, and entitled to cross personal boundaries — all while hiding behind the word “investigative.”

Let’s not pretend this behavior exists in a vacuum.

ProPublica has received millions of dollars from the Open Society Foundations, the George Soros–backed operation that bankrolls left-wing causes nationwide. When an outlet funded by progressive megadonors repeatedly targets conservatives, Republican administrations, and center-right institutions and then resorts to pressure tactics the mask comes off.

Even seasoned political professionals weren’t buying ProPublica’s excuses.

Republican strategist Steve Guest torched the outlet, pointing out that showing up in people’s private lives isn’t reporting, it’s an attempt to bully sources into submission.

Media watchdog and NewsBusters Managing Editor Curtis Houck went further, noting that ProPublica’s defense amounts to rewriting basic journalistic ethics to suit their political agenda.

And Republican communicator Christian Martinez summed it up bluntly: ProPublica doesn’t act like a newsroom — it acts like a Democratic opposition research shop that just happens to publish stories.

That’s the real scandal here.

ProPublica wants the public to believe it’s a neutral truth-seeker. But neutral journalists don’t stalk home addresses. Neutral journalists don’t contact family members. Neutral journalists don’t claim they’re “owed” responses.

This is what activist media looks like when it gets exposed: defensive, entitled, and indignant that anyone dared to push back.

Nevadans and Americans deserve real journalism, not Soros-funded intimidation masquerading as “investigation.” ProPublica can call itself whatever it wants. Its actions tell the truth.

And the truth is: they crossed the line.
