TAXING CREDIBILITY: Titus Says She Opposes Higher Taxes After Voting Against Trump Tax Cuts.

Rep. Dina Titus says she opposes raising federal tax rates, an answer that is drawing Republican criticism over the Nevada Democrat’s votes against President Donald Trump’s signature tax legislation, including its No Tax on Tips provision.

The Nevada Independent asked Titus and Republican challenger Carrie Buck whether “Congress should raise federal tax rates” as part of its questionnaire for candidates in Nevada’s 1st Congressional District.

Titus answered no.

“Taxpayers should not have to pay extra federal taxes to support the war in Iran and President Trump’s vanity projects such as his White House ballroom, his arch and his golden horses,” Titus wrote. Buck also answered no, arguing Nevada families are already paying too much for basic necessities.

But Titus’ answer immediately reopened a fight over her tax record.

Titus voted against H.R. 1, Trump’s sweeping tax and spending package, when it cleared the House 218-214 on July 3, 2025. Every House Democrat opposed final passage, including Titus.

That legislation created the federal No Tax on Tips deduction, along with a deduction for qualified overtime compensation and other tax provisions. The Congressional Research Service notes that the tips provision allows qualifying workers to deduct up to $25,000 in tip income, subject to income and eligibility limits.

Republicans seized on the contrast between Titus’ questionnaire answer and her vote.

“It’s funny how, with Election Day right around the corner, @dinatitus is all of a sudden a tax-relief champion,” NRCC spokesman Christian Martinez wrote on X. “She voted for the biggest tax hike since WWII, and AGAINST No Tax on Tips. The only paycheck Dina gives a damn about protecting is her own.”

The “biggest tax hike since WWII” language is a Republican characterization of Democrats’ opposition to extending and expanding tax provisions in H.R. 1, rather than the title of a separate tax-increase measure Titus supported. The NRCC has repeatedly used that framing against Titus, Rep. Susie Lee and Rep. Steven Horsford, including in a paid advertising campaign earlier this year.

The sharper point for Titus is easier to document: when Congress considered legislation containing No Tax on Tips and No Tax on Overtime, she voted no.

Now, with voters being asked to choose between Titus and Buck, both candidates are formally telling Nevadans the same thing on federal tax rates: no increase.

The argument heading into November will be over which record voters believe backs that answer up.
