Trump Announces Historic Midterm Convention as Republicans Look to Expand Majority in 2026

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Republicans will hold the first Midterm Convention in modern American history, creating what party leaders say will be a major showcase for the America First agenda just months before voters head to the polls in one of the most consequential midterm elections in decades.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, unveiling plans for a national gathering designed to rally Republicans behind the administration’s accomplishments and build momentum heading into November.
The event marks a significant departure from traditional midterm campaign strategy. While political parties typically reserve national conventions for presidential election years, Trump is bringing Republicans together for a convention-style event focused entirely on defending and expanding the GOP’s congressional majorities and electing Republicans across the country.
Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters called the announcement historic and said the convention will serve as a celebration of the administration’s record while laying out the party’s vision for the future.
“This historic Midterm Convention will highlight President Trump’s many accomplishments and unwavering commitment to restoring America,” Gruters said. “This convention will be a Trumpapalooza, where we will showcase the America First agenda, which has delivered the largest tax cut in history and made communities safer. President Trump will unite Republicans around our shared vision, build momentum, and deliver an incredible convention for our Party.”
The announcement comes as Republicans enter the final stretch of the 2026 campaign with growing confidence.
Since returning to office, Trump has signed the Working Families Tax Cuts, including No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, and an enhanced deduction for seniors. The administration has also prioritized border security, increased immigration enforcement, strengthened support for law enforcement, expanded domestic manufacturing, and rolled out a series of executive actions focused on energy production, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and national defense.
Republicans argue those accomplishments provide a stark contrast with Democrats, who continue struggling to unify their party after a disappointing 2024 election cycle.
Recent internal Democratic analyses acknowledged that the party lost ground with working-class voters on issues including the economy, immigration, and public safety. Meanwhile, Republicans have continued emphasizing affordability, tax relief, secure borders, and public safety as the cornerstones of their 2026 message.
Nevada is expected to play a central role in that strategy.
The Silver State remains one of the nation’s premier battlegrounds, with competitive races for governor and four congressional seats. Republicans are targeting Democratic Reps. Dina Titus, Susie Lee, and Steven Horsford, while also working to re-elect Governor Joe Lombardo.
Trump’s influence in Nevada has only grown since becoming the first Republican presidential nominee to carry the state in two decades during the 2024 election. Republicans have since pointed to improving voter registration numbers, strong fundraising, and favorable polling as signs that Nevada remains one of the GOP’s best opportunities to expand its congressional majority.
Party officials believe the Midterm Convention will energize grassroots activists, volunteers, and donors while providing Republicans with a national platform to contrast Trump’s record with Democratic incumbents defending their seats.
Unlike a traditional party convention centered on nominating a presidential ticket, the Midterm Convention is expected to focus almost exclusively on policy achievements, campaign messaging, and mobilizing Republican voters ahead of Election Day.
For Nevada Republicans, the timing could prove especially significant.
With Trump-endorsed candidates running in multiple congressional races and Republicans viewing the state as critical to holding the House and winning statewide offices, the convention is likely to amplify the issues that have dominated the campaign: tax relief, border security, public safety, and affordability.
As Republicans prepare for what Gruters described as a “Trumpapalooza,” party leaders are betting that Trump’s America First agenda remains their strongest political asset.
If the convention generates the enthusiasm Republicans expect, Nevada could once again find itself at the center of a national political movement—this time with the goal of expanding Republican majorities rather than simply defending them.
