Trump Turns Up the Heat on Europe, Escalates Tariffs to Force Greenland Deal

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, January 19, 2026 7:29 am

President Donald Trump is once again putting American leverage on full display, announcing escalating tariffs on Denmark and other European nations as part of a renewed push to secure a purchase agreement for Greenland, according to a Fox News report.

The move underscores Trump’s long standing belief that America should negotiate from strength, not apology. While critics scoffed years ago when Trump first floated the idea of acquiring Greenland, the president is now making clear he was serious then and he is serious now.

Administration officials say the tariffs are designed to get Europe’s attention and force real talks, not endless diplomatic stalling. Trump has argued that Greenland’s strategic location and vast natural resources make it critical to US national security, especially as Russia and China aggressively expand their Arctic footprints.

Trump framed the decision in blunt terms. Europe benefits enormously from access to American markets, American defense, and American taxpayers. In return, he says, the United States should not be shy about advancing its own strategic interests.

Denmark has repeatedly rejected the idea of selling Greenland, calling it non-negotiable. Trump’s response has been equally direct. If European leaders want the benefits of free trade with the world’s largest economy, they should expect tough negotiations when American security is on the line.

The tariff escalation fits a familiar Trump playbook. Apply pressure. Force the issue. Bring reluctant parties to the table. It is the same approach he used with China, Mexico, and NATO allies, often to loud complaints and quiet concessions.

Supporters argue the strategy works because it shatters the polite fiction that global trade and security arrangements are cost free. They point out that Greenland sits astride vital Arctic shipping lanes and hosts infrastructure that could prove decisive in future conflicts.

Critics warn of retaliation and diplomatic fallout, but Trump allies counter that endless deference has gotten the United States nowhere. From their perspective, Europe has grown comfortable assuming America will always foot the bill and stay silent.

Whether Denmark and its European partners blink remains to be seen. What is clear is that Trump is reminding the world that American power still comes with strings attached. In Trump’s Washington, strategic assets matter, leverage matters, and deals are not made by asking nicely.
